Noise and Vibration Control in Ships and Yachts.

1 - Noise & Vibration Tests onboard

Our team  is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic instruments and technologies in order to deliver precise, effective solutions for noise and vibration control onboard ships and mega yachts.

a) Environmental Noise and Vibration Tests onboard, aimed at :

- assessing the acceptability of the measured Ambient Noise and Vibration levels;
- defining corrective actions in the event of anomalous and/or unacceptable levels.

b) Modal Analysis (Experimental or Operational),

by means of controlled excitation (i.e. hammer test), or with vessel under operational conditions, (i.e. excitations coming from the vessel), in order to characterize the vibration behaviour of the ship structure and the identification of natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes.

c) Diagnostic Vibration tests on Machinery and Systems

Vibration test and analysis on the machinery installed onboard and systems (i.e. propulsion system, exhaust gas ducts, pumps, hydraulic systems, etc.) in order to identify misalignments, imbalances, and other issues that could cause excessive vibration.

d) Acoustic Privacy and Impact Noise Tests

- Acoustic privacy measurements involves a series of measurements and analyses to assess the sound insulation on-field performance of bulkheads, internal partitions and decks, by means of standardized sound sources and measurement protocols in compliance with  international standards. Measurement of the reverberation time in rooms to assess and control the persistence of sound, which can affect speech intelligibility and overall acoustic comfort.

- Impact Noise measurements: assessment of structure-borne noise caused by impacts on floors. Use of standardized impact sources (e.g., tapping machines) and measurements conducted in receiving rooms to quantify the level of transmitted noise with measurement protocols in compliance with  international standards.

e) Shaft Torque/Thrust/Power Measurements by means of wireless strain gauge torque sensors, in order to assess the performance and the efficiency of the propulsion system.

f) Torsional Vibrations by means of the same acquisition system above mentioned, these measurements involve the analysis of the angular oscillations of the ship's shaft around its axis of rotation. Torsional vibrations are a critical concern in power transmission systems utilizing rotating shafts or couplings, as uncontrolled vibrations can lead to failures, reduced efficiency, and increased maintenance costs.

2 - Survey on board

During construction or refitting works, in order to assess the proper installation of sound-proofing treatments and/or the installation of machinery and system critical from a noise & vibration point of view.

3 - Consultancy to the Technical Department of the Shipyards or on behalf of the Owners, during the design phase, the construction and the delivery of ships and yachts, regarding all technical aspects that could be critical from an acoustic and vibrational point of view.

Industrial and Environmental Acoustics
a) Technical Consultancy to TSF (Tele Sistemi Ferroviari SpA) during the elaboration of a computer code for the prediction of noise radiated by the whole ITALIAN RAILWAYS (21.000 Km about) and execution of an extensive noise measurement campaign, along the ITALIAN RAILWAYS.
b) Technical Consultancy to ATAC – Rome, relevant to Ante and Post Operam acoustic and vibration monitoring Surveys, aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the refitting works performed on several tram lines:
